When launching 3ds Max on a Dell laptop with integrated Intel HD Graphics, the program crashes or freezes during the startup process. This problem occurs more on Dell laptops connected to multiple monitors via a docking station. 3ds Max may also crash when connecting a 2nd monitor to the laptop or docking station.

  • Dell laptop with Intel HD Graphics.
  • Windows 10.
  • Restricted user permissions and group policies.
  • Multiple monitors attached to Dell docking station.

Windows 10 Dell laptops using integrated Intel graphics and strict permissions may prevent the 3ds Max rollup and Command Panel creation in the Qt UI code. This problem can be worsened by the presence of multiple monitors (of different resolutions) connected to the laptop.

To avoid the crashes/freezing, do one of the following:

Run as Administrator

  1. Right-click on the 3ds Max shortcut icon.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.

Note: Using this option in Windows will no longer allow for Network Drive access due to the changes made in the OS. See this article for more information.

  2. Choose Run with graphics processor.
