Crash or freeze during startup running 3ds Max on Dell laptops with integrated Intel graphics

Issue:

When launching 3ds Max on a Dell laptop with integrated Intel HD Graphics, the program crashes or freezes during the startup process. This problem occurs more on Dell laptops connected to multiple monitors via a docking station. 3ds Max may also crash when connecting a 2nd monitor to the laptop or docking station.

Environment:

  • Dell laptop with Intel HD Graphics.
  • Windows 10.
  • Restricted user permissions and group policies.
  • Multiple monitors attached to Dell docking station.

Causes:

Windows 10 Dell laptops using integrated Intel graphics and strict permissions may prevent the 3ds Max rollup and Command Panel creation in the Qt UI code. This problem can be worsened by the presence of multiple monitors (of different resolutions) connected to the laptop.

Solution:

To avoid the crashes/freezing, do one of the following:

Run as Administrator

  1. Right-click on the 3ds Max shortcut icon.
  2. Choose Run as administrator.

Note: Using this option in Windows will no longer allow for Network Drive access due to the changes made in the OS. See this article for more information.

Run with graphics processor

  1. Right-click on the 3ds Max shortcut icon.
  2. Choose Run with graphics processor.
  3. Select the option High Performance (NVIDIA, AMD) processor.

Note: In some instances the integrated graphics option can be used to start the program. Network drives can still be accessed when 3ds Max is run with the graphics processor option.

Execute the program via Command Line

Use the 3ds Max desktop shortcut icon to execute the program via Command Line. To do this:

  1. Create a 3ds Max shortcut on the desktop by right-clicking on the 3dsmax.exe file located in: C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max <version>.
  2. Choose Send to > Desktop (create shortcut).
  3. Once the 3ds Max shortcut icon is created, right-click it and select Properties.
  4. In the Targetfield where the path to the 3dsmax.exe file is located, add the following text to the beginning of the path name, keeping the path name in quotes: %comspec% /c.
    • For example, the shortcut Target could look similar to: %comspec% /c “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2019\3dsmax.exe“

5. Click Apply.

6. Click OK to confirm the edits.

7. Run the 3ds Max version by double-clicking on the newly-modified shortcut icon.

Note: If a Command Prompt window appears after launching 3ds Max, it can be closed without affecting any 3ds Max functionality.

In addition to the above options, it may also be helpful to try the following:
